Second Cohort of ‘Listen for Good’, New Request for Proposal, and Additional Funding from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Announced

Fund for Shared Insight continues to grow by selecting new grantees, securing additional funding partner, and issuing open request for proposals to increase foundation openness

NEW YORK— Fund for Shared Insight today announced its second cohort of Listen for Good grantees, a new request for proposals to increase foundation openness, and an additional funding partner in the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation – bringing the total number of funders involved with Shared Insight to thirty (30).

LISTEN FOR GOOD ROUND 2 GRANTS AND CO-FUNDERS

Listen for Good, a collaborative effort among several funders, is dedicated to building the practice of listening to the people nonprofits and foundations seek to help. This initiative will develop simple and systematic ways of obtaining feedback from nonprofits that receive foundation funding, as well as help nonprofits obtain input from the people they directly serve.

The nonprofits selected for the second round of Listen for Good include:

  • El Buen Samaritano Episcopal Mission
  • Epiphany Community Health Outreach Services
  • Family Service Center of Galveston County
  • Gleaners Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan
  • Malama Pono Health Services
  • Memorial Assistance Ministries (MAM)
  • Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI)
  • Our House, Inc.
  • PACE Center for Girls
  • Public Lab
  • TeenForce
  • UTEC

Each of the 9 co-funders involved with Listen for Good nominated one or more of these grantees, and committed $20,000 per organization in support. These co-funders include:

The Episcopal Health Foundation in Houston, Texas is one of the co-funders involved with the initiative. “Listen for Good builds a capacity within our grantee organizations that is essential for transformational impact,” says Elena Marks, President and CEO of the Episcopal Health Foundation. “We are thrilled that four of our partners will be participating in this national learning community and using a tool that gives them actionable data from the clients they serve.” The Episcopal Health Foundation works to improve the health and well-being of the 10 million people living in the 57 counties that comprise the Episcopal Diocese of Texas.

The Hawai’i Community Foundation is another co-funder supporting this second round of grantees. Pi’ikea Miller, Program Director at the Hawai’i Community Foundation states: “In our experience high performing nonprofits have multiple ways of engaging with and learning from the clients and communities they serve, and they use this feedback to continually improve programs and services. The Fund for Shared Insight’s Listen for Good grants are a great opportunity for a local nonprofit to strengthen its capacity to do this and receive technical assistance that would otherwise be unavailable to them.” The Hawai’i Community Foundation helps people make a difference by inspiring the spirit of giving, and by investing in people and solutions to benefit every Island community.

Listen for Good is currently accepting proposals from funder-nominated nonprofits on a rolling basis. Rounds one and two are now closed, and there remain 22 grants available for our third round of funding in 2016. FOUNDATION OPENNESS REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS

The Fund for Shared Insight is issuing a new open request for proposals from nonprofit partners who are interested in increasing foundation openness in service of effectiveness. This RFP is to fund new or existing efforts to increase foundation openness among staffed foundations in the United States. In 2016-2017, we expect to provide up to $2 million in grants to promote foundation openness through project grants over one or two years.
